Professor
David Ashworth from the University of Hawaii identifies,
among other things, some valuable resources that persons
who are involved in translations should be aware of: Translators
as Communicators by Hatim and Mason, which can be accessed
on the internet (Amazon Book Store -- www.amazon.com); Intercultural
Communication by Ron and Suzanne Scallon; and In Other Words,
a book on translation by Mona Baker (he suggested reading
chapter three of this publication prior to reading the Translators
as ommunicators. In addition, he identified the organization
of court reports on the internet (HAHIT) in which cultural
issues weigh heavily in trials. There is also a very active
listserve which is maintained by Helga Niska in Sweden (Lantra-L)
which is a discussion group on translations.
Professor
Richard Brislin, an internationally renowned cultural psychologist
and Director of the Ph.D. program in International Management
and Professor of Management and Industrial Relations in
the College of Business at the University of Hawaii, gave
us all valuable insights into the teaching of culture. Professor
Brislin prepared a list of references in cross-cultural
and intercultural research: Cushner, K., & Brislin.
